Our story
This site started the way most good things do — around the kitchen table.
A few years ago, my son and I were trying to make dinner from a recipe we’d found online. The instructions were vague, half the ingredients were things we’d never heard of, and there was no way to tell if we were feeding our family something nutritious or not. We looked at each other and said: there has to be a better way.
So we started writing our own recipes — just for us, at first. We’re a family of foodies living on a small hobby farm in Connecticut, where we spend as much time in the garden as we do in the kitchen. What began as a fun home project between a parent and a kid who loves to cook has grown into something we’re proud to share with thousands of home cooks just like us.
What we grow
Our hobby farm is a big part of how we cook. Depending on the season, you’ll find us growing tomatoes, peppers, fresh herbs, leafy greens, root vegetables, and a mix of berries and fruit trees. When something comes out of our garden and onto the plate, we’ll tell you — and we’ll always suggest store-bought alternatives so every recipe works no matter where your ingredients come from.
Why we started The Daily Recipe
We built this site to solve the three problems we kept running into as home cooks:
- Recipes that actually make sense. Every recipe on this site includes detailed, step-by-step instructions written for real people — not culinary school graduates. If a step matters, we explain why. If there’s a common mistake, we warn you before you make it.
- Budget-friendly ingredients. We don’t use truffle oil, high-end vanilla paste, or high-ticket specialty items just to sound fancy. Our recipes are built around ingredients you can find at any grocery store, and every recipe includes an estimated cost breakdown so you know what you’re spending before you start.
- Honest nutrition facts. Every recipe includes estimated nutrition information per serving — calories, fat, protein, carbs, fiber, sugar, and key micronutrients. We’re not dietitians, but we believe you deserve to know what’s on your plate.
How we develop and test our recipes
We’re self-taught home cooks with over a decade of experience feeding a family of four (and then some). Every recipe on this site goes through the same process:
- We develop it in our home kitchen using everyday equipment — no professional-grade tools, no restaurant shortcuts.
- We test it at least twice, adjusting measurements, timing, and instructions until it works reliably.
- We write it the way we’d explain it to a friend — with clear quantities, honest prep and cook times, and practical tips we’ve learned the hard way.
- We calculate estimated nutrition facts and ingredient costs, so you have the full picture before you start.
If a recipe doesn’t pass the family taste test, it doesn’t make it to the site.
